Teaching/Performance Residencies
A compelling method of integrating the arts into the general curriculum, residencies are the cornerstone of the Institute's education programs. Designed to extend the experience of a live theatre performance, residencies use interdisciplinary lessons, taught by teacher/actors and teacher/technicians of the Institute. Residencies are scheduled at the request of the teacher for afternoons following a morning performance.
Explore the creative process of mounting a professional theatre production that students are about to experience. Members of NYSTI's Education Department visit classrooms and schools with in-class preparations, interactive presentions that include a slide show tracing the production from design concept to technical build to rehearsal process. A great way to prepare for the theatre!
Join us for a free behind-the-scenes look at the making of our productions. Designed for educators, but open to the public as well, the two-hour Inservice program includes presentations by the production's director, designers and technicians, as well as a brief glimpse at rehearsal. Inservices take place at the Schacht Fine Arts Center on the Russell Sage College campus from 4 - 6:00 p.m.

Concepts, vocabulary and classroom activities. For each production, the Theatre Institute staff develops a study guide for teachers, a tool that extends the production into the classroom curriculum. The guide features a synopsis, vocabulary exercises and background information to prepare students, and very often includes costume sketches and set renderings. Design concepts and technical terms provide students with things to look for at the performance. Classroom activities, ideas for writing assignments and suggested interdisciplinary connections to the NYS Education Department's Learning Standards for teachers are included in the after the performance section. Study Guides are sent to all teachers making ticket reservations.
